Im Mai 2002 kam die Idee auf, mit Musikerkollegen und Kolleginnen ein gemeinsames Projekt zu starten. Aus dieser kleinen Überlegung kam es dann innerhalb von einem Jahr zu einer stattlichen The Geisterfahrer EP.

Im Mai 2006 war es dann endlich wieder so weit, es konnte eine neue Kollaboration stattfinden, diesmal zusammen mit Detlef Gessau von Herbstmanøver. Anlaß war ein Ausschreiben des ZKM in Karlsruhe. Und das Ergebnis war dann Evolüsyon üçyüzotuzüç von αlabay & Gessau, diesmal nicht in einem Jahr, sondern in drei Wochen.

Short biography: This piece to interprete ‘beauty’ is created by two persons:
Detlef Gessau from Herbstmanøver, a ‘German’.
αlabay from The Trial, a ‘Turk’.
Both are native Berliners, one still living there, the other moved to Freiburg (Breisgau) 18 years ago.
This constellation incorporates three intercultural dichotomized cross-fades: German/Turkish, City/Nature and Electronic/Acoustic. More explanations on this focusses will follow in ‘program notes’.
Mr. Gessau started playing new wave music with his group Herbstmanøver in 1978. Over the years Herbstmanøver evolved from a classic band-structure to a complete virtual project, today's one-man lineup uses only virtual instruments.
Mr. αlabay started 1985 to create alternative experimental music somewhere in between all main genres of new wave, rock, electronic and jazz with his group The Trial. Still he works with a Swiss drummer and a German experimental synth-player as an internet-based trio, collaborating with several other artists. The Trial is currently recording a Turkish alternative (new) wave album.

Program notes: We discussed the crossfades between the dichotomized culture based pairs mentioned above. And we then found out that we had to celebrate the mystic of ‘3’ - not ‘2’ as ‘dichotomy’ would recall - to reach the expression of ‘beauty’. 3 shows up a ‘third way’. So three blocks are present:
1. The main artist: a bird - true nature, not synthesized.
2. A three layers based synthesizer sound by Mr. Gessau.
3. The sound of an acoustic Turkish saz (a longneck lute).
All this is accompanied by a virtual drummer, programmed by Mr. Gessau, and is dsp post-processed by Mr. αlabay. Both has been done to increase the audibility for popular (un)trained ears, a kind of (post)modern easyfication.
As ‘beauty’ is the main theme we show the melting point of our two cultural poles, leading to a singing bird. The virtual sound is perceived as beautiful by Mr. Gessau, while Mr. αlabay played the saz that is a common folk instrument and recalls ‘beauty’ for every Turkish musician. As mentioned before, we celebrated the figure ‘three’, showing a lead-out from dichotomizing poles. This is our ‘solving’ of the problem (if there is one) of intercultural interpretation of beauty itself.
Notes on our equipment we used for this track:
Mr. Gessau used a PC and Cubase with many virtual instruments to create the basic tracks. He had recorded the bird's solo some time ago.
Mr. αlabay used an Apple with Logic to post-process the basic tracks and to record the live played saz. He also added an introducing snare.
The mixing was done by Mr. αlabay, the mastering by Mr. Gessau. Both together created the magpie picture.
